From winning 2 Commonwealth golds to spending 15 years touring the world with Cirque du Soleil, Kanukai shares his transformation journey and the philosophy that knockdowns aren't negatives—they're opportunities.
He discusses resilience, elite performance, career transformation, and why winning gold felt like relief instead of joy. Kanukai also opens up about competing through 22 surgeries, learning to act and show emotion on stage, and developing his own performance act that he sold to Cirque du Soleil. Whether you're navigating career transitions, building resilience, or pursuing elite performance, this conversation offers hard-won wisdom on mental toughness, strategic pivots, and long-term success. Let's explore what's "Inside the mind of a Commonwealth Champion."
Guest Bio
Kanukai Jackson is a Commonwealth gold medalist and Cirque du Soleil veteran known for being rejected as Olympic reserve—instead building a 27-year career through 22 surgeries, 85 consecutive chin-ups, and the principle that "knockdowns aren't negative, they're opportunities."
Rising from making the British national gymnastics team at age 12 (despite being told he'd "never amount to anything") to winning 2 Commonwealth golds where victory felt like "relief as opposed to enjoying it", competing at European Championships with a destroyed shoulder and still winning bronze, then pivoting entirely into 15 years touring seven countries with Cirque du Soleil not as a gymnast but as a performer who had to learn emotion by "sneaking into acting workshops I wasn't meant to be there", eventually becoming head coach and entrepreneur who sold his own straps act to Cirque—Kanukai Jackson built a legacy proving you don't measure athletes by medals, you measure them by how many times they get back up.
